6 Mistakes Gym Newbies Must Not Make

Health club and gym newbies are typically unfamiliar with established gym etiquette.  It is important for those who are new to the gym environment to take note of several important considerations.

Hogging Equipment

It’s important to consider that your fellow exercisers may be on a tight schedule or engaged in a workout program that requires them to take minimal rest between sets of exercise.  Be considerate of others who are working out and only use each piece of equipment for the amount of time it takes to complete your set of exercise.

Not “Working In”

If your gym tends to be crowded at times when you are working out, it is important to understand the acceptable way of sharing equipment.

“Working in” refers to taking turns with one or more people who are using a single piece of equipment.   Each person will perform one set of exercise, wipe off their perspiration then allow the next person to perform one set of exercise.

Taking Up Too Much Space

It is accepted that exercisers are going to carry a certain amount of gear with them around the gym.   It’s important for gym newbies to refrain from carrying around excessively large gym bags and unnecessary items.

You should take up as little space as possible when working out and try not to clutter walkways and floor space.

Hogging the Water Fountain

Staying hydrated during your workout is important for your performance and general health.  If you are going to use your gym’s water fountain during your workout, only spend as much time at the fountain that is necessary for you to take a couple gulps of water.

Don’t stand at a water fountain for an extended period of time filling up a large water jug.

Not Wearing the Right Clothes

Most gyms have policies that prohibit members and guests from wearing certain types of clothing.  Most members adhere to these rules but don’t consider how important their apparel is in the performance of their workout.

For example, sport-specific shoes are designed to address a specific limitation that some people experience when exercising.

Chatting on Your Cell Phone

Not only is talking loudly on a cell phone in the gym annoying; it can be dangerous.  When people talk on their cell phones they generally lose concept of space and time and are distracted from their surroundings.  This is especially dangerous when attempting to perform an exercise while on the phone.
